10/3– 10/7 Dear Parents, October is a busy month here at school. There is no school on Oct. 7th for Columbus Day. The end of the 1st quarter is Oct. 21st. Report cards will be emailed out on Friday, Oct. 28th. The students have another half-day Wednesday, Oct. 26th and a Halloween class party on Monday Oct. 31st! A reminder to send in the $5.00 for the class parties this year which the PTA is collecting. The weather is changing and the students will continue to go out for recess. Please encourage your child to dress appropriately for the weather. We tell the children they can always take off their sweaters or jackets if they get warm. Second Grade Intramurals begins next week on Thursday 7:40 for those students who signed up. Check out the PTA website for all the update information www.frpta142.com Below are the skills that will be covered next week. Reading: We continue Module 1: Schools and Community. We are starting Unit 2 switching our focus to nonfiction. We will continue with our topic of schools learning and writing about schools around the world. The children will write informative paragraphs about the topic, supply facts about the topic and write a conclusion (2.W.2). Then we will compare and contrast the schools (2.RI.9). Reading Skills Block Cycle 3, students review the “ee”, “ea” & “y” vowel teams as long “e” and the high-frequency words our, been, down, before. The children need to review these words daily.They will bring home a list of words that follow those patterns. There are links below with the word list and the Choice Board with ideas of ways to practice the words. There will be a test on Friday and the Choice Board is due Friday.Cycle 3 Word ListSpelling Choice Board Math: We will begin Unit 2 2-Digit Addition and Subtraction within 100. Topic 3 the students will be learning strategies to fluently add and subtract within 100 (2. NBT.5). It is important for students to continue to practice math facts to 20. The children will continue to get homework worksheets to practice the skills taught in class. Feel free to reach out with any questions about the worksheets. Science:We will continue the first unit Material Magic. The third lesson is Heating, Cooling & Phases of Matter. We will explore “Why are so many toys made out of plastic?” In this lesson the students learn about melting, about the solid and liquid states of matter, and then discover why plastic was invented.
